Sport

Sport is a very important and special part of the fabric of Bellingen High. Sport at Bellingen has 4 strands:

Weekly Sport:
In line with departmental policy, weekly sport is compulsory for all students in years 7 to 11. For year 12 students, weekly sport is optional provided they have completed their year 11 commitments. Students in year 11 are required to have 20 sport attendances over the period of terms 1 to 3. These may be made up from representative sport as well as weekly sport. The weekly program is conducted on Wednesday for year 9 to 12 students and Thursdays for year 7 and 8. Students change sport each term. Students have the opportunity to experience a wide variety of sports with over 30 different sports being offered throughout the year.

Representative sporting opportunities:
Such opportunities are available through our participation in the many Combined High School (CHS) state knockouts as well as a number of local competitions. In addition, individuals are able to advance their sporting experience and achievements via attendance at the CHS zone and regional selection trials. In recent years both our girls and boys soccer, rugby league and rugby union teams have all been very successful in these CHS knockouts, reaching regional finals, plus in a number of cases going on to state quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals.

In athletics and swimming we have also witnessed fine individual performances by our students with a number of them gaining medals at both state and national level.

  School carnivals:
Carnivals are conducted in terms 1 and 2 in athletics, cross country and swimming. These are used to determine which students qualify to go on to compete at zone trials.

Inter-school visit:
An inter-school visit with Quirindi High School is also held annually. This visit has been going since 1974. It aims to give Bellingen students a taste of inland life and allow Quirindi students to have a coastal experience. The venue alternates each year between the two schools. The host school is responsible for billeting the visiting school and organising the events. It involves both junior and senior teams competing in 30 different matches for the Beau Valley shield. It also gives many students who would not be in knockout representative teams an opportunity to represent the school in sport. All students at our school have the opportunity to avail themselves of these many sporting opportunities because of:

  • the keenness and dedication of many of our staff to train organise and accompany our many sporting teams
  • the support and assistance of many parents plus our P & C, in numerous ways
  • the overall support of our staff who willingly take lessons for those teachers out of the school accompanying sporting teams.
