The HSIE (Human
Society & Its Environment) key learning area focuses on studying human
activity and the world in which we operate.
The HSIE faculty houses a range of "Humanities"
subjects which begin at the Junior School level (ie. Years 7 - 10) with
the essential, foundational subjects of :
- H.S.I.E. (which is a creative mixture
of Geography & History)
- Commerce / Personal Finance and Legal
Studies
These building block courses are then expanded
in the Senior School (ie. Years 11 & 12) by offering students a range
of interesting elective subjects.

Excursions
|
|
|
| |
One of the reasons
why students enjoy HSIE subjects at BHS is that excursions are an integral
part of its content matter . Excursions range from short, one period excursions
within the local area to longer term adventures much further afield.

The two biggest
excursions in the HSIE Faculty are the annual Year 11 Geography
trip to Jindabyne and the Society & Culture voyage to Vietnam.
Year 11 Geography trip is a fantastic, week-long
adventure incorporating :
|
|
|
|
| |
- Studies of the Snowy Mountains Scheme
and pollution in the High Country
- 3 days Skiing / Snowboarding at either
Thredbo or Perisher Valley
- Additional activities like Indoor Rock
Climbing, Abseiling, Initiatives (group problem solving) and a Flying
Fox / Ropes course.
The Society and Culture excursion to Vietnam is a fortnight venture into
the Orient. This Christmas holiday trip introduces participants to life
overseas and gives a real taste of Asian culture.
